A beautiful Kayan long neck woman. I initially didn’t want to see these women as thought I would be supporting a cruel custom but learned that the Kayan can remove these coils when they want to and their necks won’t break. Also if you look, the coils extend over the shoulder a bit providing illusion of more length. I tried on a neck piece and yikes they are heavy. Great protection if a tiger decides to lunge at your throat which is what they were originally worn for - protection. The Kayan used to wear coils around other body parts too for this reason. Today they wear them for traditional reasons though the custom is fading I believe. I’ve read long neck women in Thailand are slaves, trapped in a life posing for tourist pictures. In Myanmar, where they are from, they are free to do what they want. Though seeing these women in a touristic setting did still make me uneasy. #kayan #longneckwomen #travel #myanmar (at Inle Lake)
